It’s finally official. After many speculations, rumors, and reportedly big salary agreements, the judges table for American Idol has finally been set. According to TVGuide, joining returning judge Randy Jackson will be Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.
Other changes: the show will hold it’s first ever online auditions via MySpace, the new age limit will be 15, and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe (So You Think You Can Dance) will return.
The new judges have a lot to prove. Reactions were mixed after Kara DioGuardi joined the ranks, and remained so when Ellen DeGeneres came on board after Paula Abdul left. In addition, Idol has seen a decline in ratings over the past few years, with last seasons finale drawing the lowest audience since the first season. The return to the three judge panel might help, however J-Lo, someone who I do feel is talented, tends to get bashed no matter what she does. Tyler, on the other hand is a legend, but has to deal with his bandmates, who are not very happy with him joining the show.
I try to keep an open mind, but to be honest, I checked out of Idol a long time ago, and only occasionally tune in to see what kind of talent they have. I did tune in during the Adam Lambert/Chris Allen year, but only cause of the talent of the contestants. That’s really what makes or break the show, and whomever takes over the judges table needs to remember that. Let’s hope they try not to make it about them, and really support the contestants.
What do you think? Were you surprised ( I ask sarcastically)?
