To Binge Watch, or To Not Binge Watch

I just read an interesting article from HuffPo regarding Orange is the New Black, and whether or not Netflix should release the episodes one week at a time, instead of all at once. That got me thinking about my viewing habits, especially in regards to shows like House of Cards and OITNB. Since they are released all at once, any viewer can decide to watch as many episodes that they want in one sitting.

On my latest recap, I stated that I had chosen to watch OITNB over the course of a few weeks, though I wasn’t sure of my decision. After many grueling hours (and tubs of red velvet ice cream), I decided that waiting would be best. That’s what works for me, but others might feel I’m wrong, which is okay. Here are three reasons on why it’s okay to do either.

We Love the Anticipation

Yes, I know that all TV seasons come to an end at some point, and if I decided to binge, so what? It’s not like movies have their sequels released the next day, right? Well, I actually like having something to look forward to, and somehow, having a new episode to view gives me a small amount of pleasure. Like the HuffPo article says, it makes me  happy to anticipate relaxing on my couch, firing up the Apple TV and starting the next episode. The only difference is that I don’t have a set time for watching episodes, which fits me just fine.

Playing Catch-Up

Now don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of binge watching. As a TV addict, how can I not? In fact, it’s a great way to catch up on shows that you may not have gotten around to seeing thanks to an already packed schedule (or if your partner thinks you watch too much TV.) So if I ever do decide to go back to Glee, I’ll probably want to check out the past couple of seasons. Then again, after what I’ve read about them, maybe not.

There is so Much Else Out There

Okay, so if I mistakenly burn through all the new episodes of OITNB, it wouldn’t exactly be the end of the world. Yes, I would have to wait a long time for any new episodes, but I’m pretty sure I’ll find something else to fill the void until then. Even non-TV related stuff (oh, the horror.)

What do you think? Do you binge watch TV shows on Netflix? Or do you savor them over a period of time?
