‘Glee’ recap and review: ‘Props’ and ‘Nationals’

This week Gleeks were treated to a two hour feast on “Glee,” with an episode that combined the much hyped body switching episode “Props” with “Nationals.” The resulting event was a treat for the ears, and finally gave the way underused Jenna Ushkowitz a chance in the spotlight. Now, since so much happened, it would be difficult to reach it all, so I’ll just focus on what I liked and did not like in the episode.

Whatever’s on TV Recap : American Idol, Top 11 Perform Again

Who performed the best?

Here we go again “American Idol” fans; a new week, a new set of songs. This week the top 11 perform to living legend Elton John, who has a distinctive flavor that usually only he can produce. I’m worried the the contestants might not be able to even come close to matching that, or worse yet, choose to sing “Circle of Life.” Don’t get me wrong, I love “The Lion King,” but even I would have to admit that if anyone even attempted it, it would go beyond the dreaded Karaoke label. So how did everyone do? Read on to find out.

Whatever’s On TV Recap: Dancing with the Stars, Week 1

Welcome to the Ballroom folks for the first recap and review of the season. By the looks of the premiere, we are in for a bumpy ride. You know, there have been a lot of complaints that this season was light on bankable stars, and at first I was a little inclined to agree. Did the premiere change my mind? Read on to find out.

TV Review: Community – “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas”

I have to admit it, I love Community, but I haven’t been the most faithful watcher this season. It isn’t the fault of the show; Thursday’s just happen to be jam-packed with some of my favorites (The Vampire Diaries, The Big Bang Theory) that something had to stay in the DVR until I actually got some free time. But this week, after hearing about the special stop-motion animated “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas,” I decided nothing was going to stop me from watching. You know what, I’m really glad I tuned in.

The episode quickly picks up in the cafeteria where pop-culture obsessed Abed (Danny Pudi) announces that the entire group is now animated in the stop-motion style of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. They become a little concerned about his mental state, and set up an intervention. What follows is a Winter Wonderland journey through the mind of Abed in order to find the meaning of Christmas, complete with song and dance numbers.

This wasn’t the funniest Community I have seen, but it was still better than some of the other comedies out there. There were some clever jokes (especially the dig at Lost), and it appears great care was taken in the details: from the Polar Express-like train (which had a setting called “Bjork”), to the ba-hum-bugs (a swarm of insects that attack those who are particularly snarky) it appears that great care was taken throughout the whole process. Plus, who can resist seeing Pierce as a Teddy Bear, and Troy becoming a “Troy Soldier.”

The best part for me, though, was the heartbreaking realization of why Abed decided to retreat to his cartoon, offering more insight into one of the best characters on T.V. today. It was a very tender moment, and added depth to this already strong episode. Perhaps a little too much though, since the laughs didn’t come as fast and furious as they normally do.

What I can appreciate the most is that Community takes chances which generally pay off. Anything like this episode is gamble, and if done wrong, audiences might run screaming. But when done right, we are offered a rare treat. This was one of those rare times, and seriously has me rethinking my Thursdays.

Community airs Thursdays on NBC.

Whatever’s On TV Recap: Glee “Special Education”

Article first published as TV Review: Glee – “Special Education” on Blogcritics.

Lately, there seems to be a huge difference of opinion on the past few episodes of Glee. Some have felt that they have focused too much on Kurt’s character (which I don’t see as a bad thing) while others like myself have simply adored them. Was this week’s episode any different? Read on to find out!

Whatever’s On Recap- Glee “Furt”

Article first published as TV Review: Glee – “Furt” on Blogcritics.

Oh, Glee, I realize some people might still be on the hate wagon with you, but you’ve completely won me over again. Last night’s “Furt” continued a great advance in your storytelling, and while not my favorite this season (that honor still goes to “Never Been Kissed”) you still proved there are plenty of reasons to not give up on you just yet.
